Return to Rùm
My first expedition to the Isle of Rùm, an internationally recognized nature reserve in the Inner Hebrides, Scotland, was in 1985 to teach environmental field courses. Despite the masses of midges and the deluges off old volcanic mountains that trap the rain clouds as they race across the Atlantic, I fell in love with Rùm. Over the next five years, I frequently repeated my journey for my PhD research on environmental changes associated with the woodland restoration program that began in 1958 and led to the planting of over a million native tree species. After more than thirty years, I returned to Rùm, curious to see how the woodlands had grown. I was not disappointed.
